We have prayed much over our nation as we approached the Federal elections on April 28, 2025. And now it’s over, and our government for the next four years has been decided. Regardless of who we voted for and who is currently in the leadership of the country, we recognize that is ultimately God who appoints, and our simple response to the choice that was made is to “lift up holy hands without quarreling” to pray for those who are “kings and in positions of authority over us” (1 Timothy 2:1-8). So what do we pray for? First, pray for unity. The Liberal Party now asked to form the government is in the position whereby they are a “minority government”. That is, they did not win enough seats in the House of Commons to form a majority, and would need another party to join with them to have the House work at all. If the House is disunited, the country freezes into a standstill. Motions cannot be passed; laws cannot be put into place. In the previous government (also under the Liberals), an agreement was made with another party that was small but vocal, and the House of Commons was deeply divided. In fact, that small party eventually broke that agreement and the government froze to a standstill. Disunity causes distress. As it turns out, that small party is now even smaller, having lost most of the ridings they held. If we are to do anything at all as a people, our leaders need a unity only God can give. Jesus stated clearly, “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand” (Mark 3:24-25). Second, in this regard, pray for humility and harmony. The cost of disunity is a broken house; the cause of disunity is pride and anger. We are, in Canada, governed by a set of parliamentary rules that is geared towards disunity. The second largest party not in government is called “the opposition.” Many in this position find themselves needing to speak against everything that the government proposes, good or bad. The result is an adversarial House. We have turned “accountability” into a statement of war and the system itself stokes pride and kills harmony. It would take Divine intervention for all to live in harmony with one another. We must pray. But the third is the most important of all. We must pray for godly wisdom. The Book of James describes two types of wisdom – demonic, worldly wisdom and godly wisdom or “wisdom from above”. The first is infused with selfish ambititon, quarreling, disorder and envy; the second bears the fruit of purity, gentleness, reasonableness, mercy and peace (James 3:15-18). Whoever you read in the post-analysis of the election, the single common thread of every discussion is that our elections were deeply influenced by the threat of our southern neighbour. We have in fact chosen a leadership that we think might be able to respond to the attitude from the US of “selfish ambition, quarreling, disorder and envy”. If we think that worldly and demonic wisdom may be defeated by worldly and demonic wisdom, we are gravely in error. The only way to respond to ungodliness is to be godly. The only wisdom that will stand in the end is godly wisdom.
In the weeks and months to come, Canada will see our House of Commons take shape. The natural life will lead towards disunity and ungodliness. Please pray. It is the best thing we can do for our nation.
Just Church
At Just Church, we are called to call on our Lord for our nation so that our nation may come to our Lord. “The vision of Just Church is to establish a church in just the way Christ called the church to be – true to His Word, loving Him, loving one another, and loving the lost.”
